Why do autistic children enjoy hanging upside down?

The combination of vestibular and proprioceptive stimulation can be highly effective in reducing anxiety, restlessness, and stress. For this reason, many autistic children naturally use this activity as a form of self-regulation.
- A different visual perspective
Being upside down also changes visual perception. The world is literally seen from an inverted perspective, which may be interesting, engaging, or simply enjoyable. It can also reduce sensory overload by limiting the usual visual field and creating a simpler, more predictable environment with fewer distractions. Since the child chooses to hang upside down voluntarily, this change in perception is usually reassuring rather than unsettling, reinforcing a sense of control.
- The physical sensations themselves
For some children, the most important aspect is simply the sensation of increased blood flow toward the head or the deep pressure created by gravity while inverted. These sensations can be comforting and help regulate their sensory system.
Overall, hanging upside down can significantly improve well-being for autistic children and is often much more than simple play. In addition, supporting the body with the legs requires physical effort, which can also provide beneficial sensory input.
Parents should always supervise children during these activities, ensuring that the child’s head cannot strike furniture edges or other hard surfaces and that a soft landing surface, such as cushions, mats, or grass, is available underneath.
It is also important not to overdo the activity.
